I was just trying to answer someone elses question about a cable modem problem when I realised I've got no idea how to release or renew my ip address on a mac(as provided via dhcp from an isp or whatever) I can imagine it might be easy enough in an osx console with it's unix commands I'm familiar with, but what do you do in older mac os's? I've always kind of liked the fact that my mac laptop 'just works' and I don't have to bother with the internals, but I'm curious now, is there a awy?

In OS X, it's a simple matter of switching from DHCP to something else, or from Ethernet to another network interface, closing the control panel, and reopening it and switching back.
