Subject: Reinstall of PantherOS: Win XP, Win 2K Server, MaCPU/Ram: MimiMac 1.2 Ghz, 512MB |
Comment: Last night, I reinstalled OSX because I was having some system errors on boot. The install said it would copy over my old user accounts, but now upon bootup, I get a logon screen (whihc didn't happen before the reinstall), and none of my user logon accounts work. The only selectable user is "Other" Any ideas? I'd like to at least be able to back some stuff up if a format is needed. Reply: (edit)Hi Steve, It sounds like the netinfo database is corrupt. "Other" is there for network users and/or the "root" user which you could possibly log in as right now and back up your data. First you want to reset the root user password. Start from the cd(just like you were going to reinstall) before you select a language and continue, click on "installer" and "reset password", click the hard drive and by default you'll see "Administrator/Root". Put in a password, verify it and then save. Quit the "reset password" utility and then quit the "installer". You should now be back at the login window. Use "root" for the name and then your password. IF that doesn't work you could force the setup assistant to run again. here's how to run the Setup Assistant again: Restart your Mac while holding down Command-S to boot into Single User mode. When the prompt appears, type the following, pressing the return key after each line (make sure you watch the spaces and capitalization): mount -uw / cd /private/var/db/netinfo mv local.nidb local.old rm ../.AppleSetupDone exit Hope this helps. Dimitris
