Is there a way of recovering video files after a quick format and re-install? I know that you can't if you "zero all data"

Unlikely you'll be able to recover anything after a reformat. You could try data rescue, or a data recovery company.

Actually, I would disagree with that comment. The OS is installed on the first few gigabytes of a hard drive and the rest is used for data storage. I suspect if you just reinstalled the OS then you should be able to access all of your data again using some data recovery software, like data rescue mentioned above, as it should still be there.
