On my new ibook g4, I've got an airport card connecting to my linksys wap11 access port. However, when the mac is put to sleep and then woken up, I have to manually reconnect to the link. The manual reconnect always seems to work but it is very annoying to have to do this.

Can the ibook be configured to automatically attempt to reconnect upon waking up?

I don't have Panther yet, but at least under 10.2, the relevant reference settings are in the Network pane of System Preferences. Choose Show: AirPort and click
on the AirPort tab.
