Unfortunately I locked myself out of my iMAC OS 9 and had to get back "in" by using the started disk and holding down the C key. I have now got my old stuff back but I think I have duplicated my system folder & hard drive. I have been told that this is not a good thing and I may damage the Mac. Can anyone give me some advice on this or direct me to a web page or book that would help? I would be very grateful for your thoughts. Cheers.

See if there are two items called "System Folder" on your hard disk.

If so, figure out which one you *don't* need, and remove the Finder and System files from it.
