Help! I am using an imac with 64 megs of
ram, OS 8.6, a cable modem (recently
installed) configured to use a DHCP
server. I don't recall any real problems
prior to cable internet. I use Internet
Explorer(latest version). There is a 4 port
hub (powered) with a Que USB CD
Burner and a HP 812c Desktop printer.
Also a Imation super disk drive. I am
experiencing random freeze ups that
disable all functions (including the force
quit option). I have not been able to
narrow the freezes down to any one
particular function. It seems to happen
randomly. If anyone has any solutions
please help! Also when I tried to type this
on line I received an error #10 and was
given the option of restart. Ihave run disk
first aid and rebuilt the desk top
numerous times.
Thanx,
Kent

You might try running temporarily with the USB hub disconnected to see if it still hangs up. I've had random problems with them.
Good Luck

Agreed. You should reduce your hardware load to only the cable modem and see how it goes for a few days. Then add hardware one by one every few days. Remove ALL software assosciated with the devices you are removing!
While you are at it remove any 3rd party software you have installed recently. Before re0installing anything check all the software you are going to install and see if there is an upgrade or patch so you are using the latest version.
If you ever decide to initialize & reinstall the OS, highly consider upgrading to system 9. It's worth it.

Thanx for all the advice...except LISP of
course. Did a system restore and the
faithful pup is running faster and more
efficently than ever. Still have the problem
of wanting to keep all the hardware
connected and at hand, printer, burner,
super disk drive etc....is there a usb port
device that could allow me to do this
without having any problems with freezing
again?
thanx

I too am experiencing random (no discernable pattern) lockups. Apple's TILs show a couple of possible updates that may or may not work...but at this point, non-angry teachers is looking a lot more promising than ANY alternative. Try the following 2 URLS and see if they help you:
http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n11687
(This one is an Ethernet update)

and
http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n11698
(This one is a Firmware Update, one issue it is supposed to correct is Power Fluctuation sensitivity which these beasties seem susceptible to.)

Good Luck!
