Subject: Purchasing an iMac OS: MacOS X CPU/Ram: G4 800 Mhz, ?
|
Comment: My sister is thinking about buying an iMac. I think it was called Global or something like (it looks like a globe) and it ran at 800 MHz. I was wondering if this is a good purchase? She was told that she also could run PC programs. Is it through a windows emulator? How does this go compared to say an Pentium III 800 Mhz? It is a demo ex which has costed $2,200 but now costs $1,800. Is the price good? Best Regards, Johan Torp

Reply: (edit)The imac can emulate windows programs. As far as an 800 mHz mac... that is more like a 1.8 Ghz pentium, 1.4 GHz AMD. $1,800 is fine for the mac, but you'll run into the same problem every Mac user has- it is near impossible to upgrade the hardware or anything else. regardless of what you have heard, Mac's are prone to the same crashes as PC's (ever hear of error type 11? If not, get used to it!)

Reply: (edit)Why would you need to run the Office suite and MSN Messenger in emulation when you can buy Mac native versions of the programs? There are plenty of CAD programs for the Mac, and plenty of other programming packages as well. I'd suggest you check out the Macintosh Product Guide on apple.com. p

Reply: (edit)The Microsoft programs are virtually *identical* across the two platforms. Obviously, two CAD packages may not be even remotely similar; likewise with compilers. p
