I was trying to upgrade the operating system on my G3. when the system started to reboot it went to a black screen and never finished loading. Now every time I reboot the system it goes to a black screen and never loads the OS.

I was going from OS 8.6 to 10.3.

Thanks

The problem may be that your G3 system doesn't support
Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther". Apple dropped support for some
G3 systems upon the release of 10.3. If you can post the
details of your G3 system it would be helpful.

the most i can tell you is that is a G3 266mhz processor 128mb ram and 6gb hard disk drive. Now that i'm stuck in a "black screen of death" I can not get further details from the machine. If I can not install osx, how can I rescue the current 8.6 os?

I would however still like to upgrade to the newest possible os that supports my system, which version could I install?

I think that the max you can go with the beige G3 is 10.2 however, with the product called XPostFacto you can go to 10.3. It sounds like you tried to go directly from 8.6 to 10.3.... this is a no no. You should have updated your system to 9.2.2 first. Then backup your HD and then update to 10.2.8.

Have you tried booting from an external hard disk with say... system 8.6 or better?

You have to update you firmware in 9.2.2 before you even think of going to 10.

I hope this helps in getting you started in the right direction. GOOD LUCK!
