When I click on a folder or file in the finder or on the desktop it fails to open unless you use 'open file' in the File menu. Now it wont open an email as a separate window in Mail so you can't open a Draft. This machine is a G5 iMac and is pretty full 136gb used with 12gb spare. It is backed up so I will start to delete unnecessary folders. When I boot up from instal disk and run first aid it now says there is a disk error that needs to be repaired but Disk Utility can't fix it. Am I on the edge of the machine breathing its last or can it be resuscitated? many thanks Marc

This might sound very silly, but are you using a cordless mouse, if so how fresh are the batteries? This happens to me everytime my batteries are low! You have to try the simple stuff first ; ) If you are really worried about the disk problem and you are safely backed up you could reformat and re-install, if the error is serious it wont let you, a new hard drive would be cheap enough and not to hard to fit.

Thanks - I am indeed using a cordless mouse which is playing up. Whether that is age (4 years) or batteries, new batteries will determine. I will try a corded mouse to be sure. I'll also try the reformat and reinstall. Thanks again!
