The way to do it is "command-shift-3" to get a snapshot, in pict format, of the entire screen area. "command-shift-4" will give you a crosshair in place of your usual cursor, and you position this to the top left of the area you want to capture and click/drag to the bottom right. Let go of the mouse button and you will hear the same 'snapshot' sound as 'cmd/shft/3" would give but only the selected area will be captured. You will find these at the root level of the hard drive named "Picture 1", "Picture 2", and so on.

If you turn on the "caps lock" key before
cmd-shift-4 you can then click into a window
take a snapshot of just the window you click
