when restarting or booting press command + option + p + r at the same time and wait for the computer
to " booing " 2-3 times and let go. Zaping the p-ram reset a few control panels like General, Startup Disk sound ...

Or use TechTool/TechTool Light, because it will restore important settings like date of manufacture and hours of use, while still resetting everything else.
TechTool is just an all-around good thing to have, and it's free.
