Comment: I have heared that the 3400 supports CardBus, and some say it only supports PCMCIA. Who is right? What about the 5300? CardBus or PCMCIA? THANKS!!!

Reply: (edit)Uhh.. I don't really think so.. As I recall, PCMCIA was the earlier 16-bit card standatd, while CardBus was the newer 32-bit one. Almost all cards use CardBus today, so I want to make sure the PB 3400 is compatible with them, but I doubt it. Does anyone know? THANKS AGAIN!!

Reply: (edit)Cardbus/PCMCIA is one in the same, they had different types of cardbus/pcmcia (ie. type I, Type II, etc.) but they are verymuch the same.

Reply: (edit)someone gave me an old pcally bus card to usb adapter card. I have a 3400 mac powerbook runing 0s9.1. This card fits into the slot and even shows up on the desk top. But I can't get it to otherwise work. Are there any drivers for this card. It says it's for windows 98, but the person that gave it to me said if I can find a driver it would work. Thank you for your time. Linda

Reply: (edit)I still say they are not the same... do some research and find out for yourself... Cardbus is a specification that allows PCMCIA cards to transfer data at rates exceeding 100MB/sec. Older, 16-bit PCMCIA cards transfer data at a rate of 20MB/sec. www.tecksel.com.au/glossary/Default.asp -MikeG

Reply: (edit)Powerbook 3400 is fully cardbus compliant, i'm using a macally cardbus USB card with OS 9.1 on my 240 mhz Powerbook 3400: infact the controller for PCMCIA slot is a Texas Instrument PCI 113O which is cardbus compliant, but the pc card cage is not made for Cardbus , so if you want to use cardbus adapters you have to shave their left side so they can phisically fit in the cage. you must download USB Card support 1.4.1 from Apple site and rememberthat if you boot the 3400c with the USB card in place, it doesn't seem to recognize it so insert the USB card after booting Andrea

Reply: (edit)I'm a PB3400 user and have looked into this extensively. The chip that does all the PCMCIA controlling is in fact 32bit compliant BUT the 3400 is fitted with a 16bit PCMCIA card cage. To be 100% 32bit cardbus compliant, the card holder in the 3400 has to be physically changed to a 32bit card one. A company in the US called MCE offers this service for $99, but as Andrea has pointed out, you can shave abit off the corner of the card BUT this does not work for the majority of 32bit cardbus cards so becareful. Roger
