Power Mac 7100/66 startup problem

I picked up an old power macintosh 7100/66 at a thrift store (very cheap, only $4.00) & was trying to start it up, and after it booted successfully once, it won't go past the splash screen anymore; it will however boot up from an OS 8 CD. any suggestions? Thanks!

Just reinstall the OS, probably an extension or control panel conflict, or corrupt file. Will it boot with the shift key held down? PowerMac 9600(1 ghz G4) 512mb RAM 50gb SCSI ATi 9200 PCI
