i've got a g4 tower but the only monitor i have to hand at the moment is an old commodore 1940. the problem is when the mac starts to boot the monitor can display the resolution but then it switches to a higher res which is to high and the screen just rolls. how can i get it to use the original startup res and not to switch to higher. i'm new to mac and cannot use the computer until i afford a new monitor. but surely if the old commodore can display startup i can use it. i know it wouldnt be very clear but at least i could use it until i can afford a decent monitor. please can anyone help?????

If you're trying to use a Commodore monitor on a new G4, you're pretty much out of luck. Your best bet would be to find a good deal on a used monitor that will work. Most any VGA monitor will work with the connector on the G4's video card, and most Mac monitors will work with a VGA-to-Mac adapter.

thanks for answering. i got it to work in 640x480. but i think this is a graphic card mode. as it wont save this mode when i reboot, and its not on the prefered display list. anyway at least i can use it, its only temporary (the vga monitor i was using wont work anymore more) i am hoping to get a lcd display, before i got blind, though i dont think it will be an apple one as these seem v.expensive and work work on a pc. or maybe i dont know what i'm on abut ;)
