Comment: Can anynone help me? you guys seem knowledge full about mac's im a PC boy, and recently ive been given a mac powerbook 5300c laptop off a man it took me 20 minutes to find the on button thats how new i am THIS IS NOT A LIE, the problem is when i turned it on it shows a computer with a face for a few seconds then goes onto a picture of a floppy disk with a question mark on it! does anyone know what this means im desperate? and can anyone advise me on an OS for it i dont know where to get them and which ones right, and finaly i got some info on how to partion my mac it says i can do it into 8 as a max what does this mean? any help would be VERY gratefull... thanks...

Reply: (edit)Get yourself a basic Mac book, like Macs for Dummies. A used copy is great because it'll probably be about the same age as the 5300. Give that a good thorough read and when you've got a good grasp of why the flashing question mark is there... Go to eBay and buy yourself an external SCSI CD-ROM (preferably Apple-branded, but it must be bootable) and a copy of OS 8.1 on CD. You'll also need an adapter for the CD drive; you can get one from any major catalog reseller. Boot from the CD, figure out how much RAM you have, and then (probably) head back to eBay to get at least 16 MB more ;) p

Reply: (edit)or go to apples website and get an operating system there- theyre freely available, and come in floppy size bites. The quick answer to your question, tho,is if you lose the happy face, and get a question mark- no operatng system's installed. thats why theres a picture of a floppy disk...
