hi,
I have a G4 quicksilver.
i'm planning to buy an internal dvd burner to replace my cd-rw.
which one should i buy?
2 years ago i had to replace my CD-RW and i was told then that not every CD-RW will work on the mac.

my options are sony or toshiba.
i really don't want to buy an external dvd since it cost dubble.

what should i get?

thanks for your help.
Michael

Get a Pioneer 107 or 108, this is the drive Apple uses.

If you're going to use it as main drive, you won't be able to boot off of it unless it's an apple branded (some pioneer, and matsutisha - sic) because otherwise there's no apple ROM..if you're using it via USB or Firewire there's a whole TON of third party drives that are supported by apple...i don't know where to find a list, but there's a whole lot listed in the 'disk burner 1.01' upgrade, and it's really old..i expect there'd be way more now.
P.S. dont! get the DVD-RAM -you'll regret it- slow, incompatible, etc..i only bought one cause it boots...

Man you shouldn't knock the dvd-ram if you don't know its best feature. Sure it may be slower, but do you know of ANY other format that can use any r/w format on disk you chose besides udf? I personaly have used ext2/3, Reister, ntfs, and fat32. As soon as I get my new Mac I'll reformat my ram disks to mac format too.

Well, MaxCat, it's got some nifty features- my dvdrams are in several file formats too, but none of my other drives can read those disks..and it can't write normal DVD's..meaning that if i back stuff up on it no other machine can recover them..it's one of the early ones tho..and i gather that problem was solved with the 4.7 gig per side versions, so it might have been better for me to say 'dont get one of the 2.7 per side DVD-RAMs'.
Michael...as to a main drive..f it's an apple branded drive it's supported..if not it will likely work fine, but not boot..i'll see if i can find that list for you...

Here's the list (from disk burner 101) as of 2001...you could probably count newer models up to 2002 if you install the "authoring support 1.19" update...

Updated Feb. 23, 2001

I should mention that for just reading cdroms almost every ATAPI drive (that's most of 'em) works fine...

A. yea I use the 4.7gb per side (9.4gb dual side) cartridge type.

B. Mine is in an external usb box so it hooks on all my computers compatability solved).

C. no clue how well it works on mac cause I haven't gotten mine yet (waiting on answer from Imac vs Emac topic)

Btw I think I saw in here somewhere that you can use any drive on a mac as long as its external like usb/firewire (correct if wrong) Does Mac, like my pc, support booting from usb device?

thanks for all the replays,
dominicus, the list you gave me is for CD-RWs not DVD-RWs.

i was reading on the internet and there seem to be a real problem with non apple drives (pioneer 106/107 models). even people who bought the same modle used by apple from pioneer mentioned problems. apple representetives here ask for more the 300$ for the DVD drive and why should i pay when i can get a better drive for less then 100$?

someone offered pioneer's new modle 108 which seems to support the mac but there is no one here i can really ask and make sure.

also about the pioneer 108 some one gave me this link:
http://www.mac-pro.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.11/it.A/id.802/.f

but there is also this SuperDrive 106 (Apple Brand): http://www.mac-pro.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.2/it.A/id.799/.f
this is the older drive. but why is the 108 drive is not OSX 10.4 ready as this 106.
could it be that i'll buy this drive and it won't be supported?

OOps! My bad on the CDRW list..late night..afraid then i don't know where to find a list, but every external DVD-R/RW I've plugged in (3 so far) has worked...
I wouldn't consider anything but an Apple drive for an internal one, myself....considering the Rom issue...but if it's a Superdrive i seriously doubt Apple would remove support for it in 10.4 (unless the model it originally came in is no longer supported in OS 10.4 either?).
