I have a Personal Laser Writer NTR, it works
ok with the original drivers (old driver) on
the OS 8.0, but it doesn't work with the
Laser Writer 8 drivers wich is supposed to
work on every Apple Laser Writer. I tried to
install the original drivers on OS 8.1 and
above but it doesn't work, it print really
bad, and when i try to print with the Laser
Writer 8 driver it prints bad when i print a
Legal page (it doesn't print the upper part
of the page and it finishes the page leaving
a free space).
What is going on?
A new driver will fix this?
where can i get

IIRC, the NTR is a QuickDraw printer, not a PostScript printer, which is why it doesn't work at all with the LaserWriter 8 drivers. (They only support PS printers, and not every Apple laser was PS-compatible.)

ISTR something about the Personal LaserWriters *other* than the 300/320 being unsupported (read: they don't work) under Mac OS 8.something, but I can't remember if that was 8.1 or 8.5 that they quit working.

Check Apple's site and see if the Knowledge Base has any useful info.

My printer is a Post Script Printer (Level 2), i know because i print with that perfect circles and it's only a 300 dpi printer, also i print post script fonts (from adobe).
In the front face of the printer is written "Personal Laser Writer" but in the backpanel is written "Apple Personal Laser Writer NTR".

Neither printing "perfect circles" nor the
ability to print PostScript fonts has
anything to do with the printer's ability to
understand the printer language of
PostScript at all.

Your printer does NOT support
PostScript. If you don't believe me, ask
Apple.

You can't. That printer won't work with a
Mac OS version that new.

It will work fine with 7.x; perhaps you can
set up a dual-boot system so that you
boot into 7.x whenever you need to print.

Having a Personal Laserwriter NTR
myself, I would like to confirm that it does
have real Postscript Level 2 built in. Proof
is at Apple's spec site:

http://www.info.apple.com/info.apple.com/
applespec/applespec.taf?cat=printer&RI
D=29

I also use this printer in OS 9.2.2 with
absolutely no problems, as well as in OS
X (when the printer is shared via Localtalk
bridge). Pickle, I think you are talking
about the LW IISC and the SC, these
were Quickdraw lasers whose support
was dropped in OS 8.

Moxi, there are several possible reasons
for the problems you are having. First
make sure you have the latest Laserwriter
8.7.1 drivers (available from
asu.info.apple.com).

Do you have a legal paper tray installed? -
it might need that, as it can tell what size
paper tray is installed. If you are trying to
print to legal size paper from manual feed
it might not work. Also you may need to
max the printer's memory to 4mb (you
probably have 3), not sure about that, but
legal pages do require more printer
memory.

This is a common problem, you can read
about some possible solutions by
searching "legal page ntr" in google
groups. There is a lot of relevant stuff
there.

Good luck!

PB,
I have downloaded the "new" driver but it is the same thing, Version 7.1.2 (or some), the only thing that changes is the size (the new one is 65k only) and the creation date is 2 years newer. The file came inside two others, a .bin file and then a .sea file, then it came the file "Laser Prep", i can't open that, it tells me that it isn't a program or a file and that it can't be opened.
How do I install my printer on 8.1 and above???

I still don't understand exactly what
problems you are having. Does it print
anything? Can the mac see the printer? I
have had no problems printing from OS
8.1 to this printer in the past.

First of all, the printer driver you state -
7.1.2 - doesn't sound to me like the right
thing. The driver you want, and which will
definitely work, is the Laserwriter 8.6
package, available from here directly:

http://downloAd.info.apple.com/Apple_Su
pport_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/Eng
lish-North_American/Macintosh/Printing/L
aserWriter/LW_8.6.smi.bin

This works on OS 7.6.1 - 8.5.1 (officially)
but should work fine on systems above
that. You should actually have the
laserwriter software already installed on
your system as it is part of OS 8 and
above. Anyway, install the software above,
and with the printer switched on and
Appletalk set to the printer port, choose
Laserwriter 8 in the chooser. The NTR
should show up. You then click it and it
will set itself up and create an icon on the
desktop. After this you should be able to
print.

I too have a similar problem with my Laserwriter NTR. I followed pb's instructions to the letter and still no dice. When I click on the Laserwriter 8 icon in the chooser, nothing appears on the right side for me to select. Apple talk is on and set to the printer port. I'm running system 8.5 on a G3 beige tower. Do I have the right cables? Not sure which is called which or what they look like. I'm using the standard 8 pin circular cable that plugs into the printer or modem port on the older macs (yes, the laserwriter is connected to the printer port). Any help would be most welcome. I've been stuggling with this since December and still can't get it to print.

Thanks!

Go to Apple's Software Downloads and
get the Mac OS 8.1 Update.

That will take care of it, and increase the
stability of your system remarkably while
you're at it.

My PLW NTR only works with Apple Talk.
The best way to make the thing going is
by installing the so called Apple Talk
boxes. One at the printer and one at your
Mac. (The connection is siple: use
telephone cable.)
Choose Apple Talk in the finder, put it on
and then you choose your printer in the
chooser.
