As i'm planning to buy a iBook, so i'm quite worring about these problems.
With these hardware:
800MHz PowerPC G3
512K L2 cache @800MHz
128MB SDRAM memorycould anybody tell me what's the different between the PC?
For example, is PowerPC G3 same as Pentium 4 1.7s function? In Mac, can i change the SDRAM into DDRAM memory?
Hope that if anyone could help me ?

as a rather new mac user (switched 8 months
ago) i advise you to go with a higher system. The
powerbooks right now are pretty cheap
considering what they are, and the new 17 inch is
very apealing. My iMac 700 is about as fast as, if
not faster than, our p4 1.4 win 2k server, both with
512 mb ram... you are going to pay more for a
similar model mac than a pc, but you get what you
pay for....the 17 inch is my next goal, along with a nice
apple server

Here's some insight, there is nothig wrong with either system, however, there are some things to consider before buying. If you plan on putting some serious strain on the processor, you may want to consider the mac, as thier L1 and L2 cache is very large (this is comparable to the torque of an engine), so when you run processor intensive applications (graphics and video mainly) it's capable of running more information through it faster. The downfall is of course the price and software and hardware compatablity and of course the price of the software and hardware. On the other hand, the Intel Pentium 4 runs a high L2 cache and big mhz numbers, but a tiny L1 cache...in short it can run basic programs VERY fast, but when it has to work hard, forget about it. In my opinion, find something with an AMD Athlon processor, it kinda gives you a happy medium area, good processor speed (mhz is the equivelant of horsepower of an engine), and the L2 cache is just as fast as the L1. There is a very good reason Mac people rip on pentium based computers (I would never use intel), but you never hear about them making fun of AMD...for a reason, they are ALMOST as fast as macs....but they ARE much cheaper, and easier to find AFFORDABLE upgrades and software. Food for thought.

Too bad AMDs don't go mobile well. No x86 CPUs do.
MHz as a horsepower equivalent is completely wrong. You AMD cheerleaders ought to know that.
p

The P4 runns very high mhz speeds. But
running applications that need grunt, the
mhz dosnt really mean anything. If you go to the apple website and have a
look at the Mac G4 1.42Ghz v.s Intel P4
3.06Ghz the mac pushes harder then the
intel running at half the mhz.The AMD is kind of like the Mac. It runs
lower mhz speeds then the intel but still
has the same speed advantage. And on
the other had a AMD processor is about
half the price of a intel. But I prefer Mac. Depends what your
using it for.
