Hello, major thanks in advance to anyone who answers.
I thought my 180 couldn't see a
Teac CD-R56S I've got in an external case
(don't worry, I wasn't wanting to burn cd's!)
because cd's wouldn't appear in the finder - until by chance I noticed it was there in
the pc-exchange control panel.
It was in italics, like the internal hd,
so I couldn't add a pc driver. Whatever I
do, changing scsi numbers, cases, leads, adapters, cd's, I just can't get it in the finder.
Should I try another drive? or am I missing
something really basic here (I haven't had
macs long)
The odd thing is, I'm certain that when I
first got the 180 I briefly hooked it up to the exact same drive - remember looking at both high sierra and joilet disks in the finder.
The only difference between then and now,
was that the 180 was running a 7.5.3
installed & configured by the previous owner, and now I've got 7.5.3 installed fresh.
I also remember the cdrom extension appearing
at startup, which I don't get with my installation, though it's in the extensions folder and 'switched on'.

I hope I'm missing something basic about
mac configuration here cos this is my only external drive...any ideas?

Thanks for reading - sorry it was so long!

Would advise you check out Low End Mac (lowendmac.net) and search for "Free CD-ROM driver"...

fantastic, thanks for the help, got me back on the right track,
I thought I was just going nuts but it
was an extension issue.
For anyones reference the driver that worked
for the Teac CD-R56S in 7.5.3 on pb180 was
apples own cdrom driver version 5.3.1 which
I downloaded from ftp.jmug.org

note this is dir of same guy that helped me,
whose html page: http://macfaq.org/hardware/media.shtml#Q2.3.5
directed me to it & has lots 3rd party cdrom
ideas.
