Comment:

I run Classic Mac software exclusively and
will for the foreseeable future. However, I
lust for a new AL PowerBook 17-inch screen.
The problem is I want to run OS 9.x, not OS
X or OS X in Classic mode.

Is there a firmware patch -- anything stable
-- that will allow me to get the result I
want, that is, to jump through whatever
hoops I must to wind up with a Year 2003
17-inch PB that runs bootable OS 9.x
partition?

As long as you have an OS 9 install CD, just repartition the drive when you get the PowerBook, and install OS 9 on one and the included OS X on the other. While Apple might not include OS 9 installers with it, I see no reason, and have heard no reason, why it's not possible to run it nonetheless.

As far as I know any macintosh computer
manfactured after january 2003 no longer
supports OS 9.

If anyone knows any different I would like
to know.

Chocolate,
Not entirely correct. New Macs will certainly "support" OS9, but will ship with "X" as the default OS. Read more :

Remember. OS X must be in the FIRST
partition on the drive.

There is NO WAY to boot any of the new PowerBooks (the 15" is still the same model as before) in OS 9.

Apple has a KBase article about this; it's not a firmware problem. It's the fact that OS 9 doesn't know what to do with the hardware. Sorta like trying to run System 7 on an iMac.

Pickle, what keyword(s) should I use to search for that KBase article? I didn't find it.
