Partitioning problem

I've bought a G5 iMac which is jaw-droppingly fabulous. It has Tiger instaled on the hard drive which is called System. I want to partition the hard drive and I've gone through the process of restarting the Mac from the OSX install disc and holding down key C. When I go into Disc Utility it displays three drives: 233.8 GB Maxtor, 5.6 GB MatshiaDVD, and System, which, when I ask for info, has 233.6 GB and 220 GB free space. When I highlight the Maxtor, I get the option to partition. There is no such option when I highlight the System drive. Are these two the same drive? If so, why are they shown separately? And why can't I partition the System drive? I'd be really glad of any help.

You will need to first erase te entire drive. Ensure your mac has started from the DVD. The drive does sound like it's already partitioned into 2 seperate areas. You can't partition the system drive because it will be locked by Apple. Hence, it needs to be fully erased before you can partition it.

your disk called 'system' is inside the maxtor. it's the maxtor you want to select and then partition. you'll see the 'Partition' tab appear ONLY when you've selected a physica hard disk, and not one of it's partitions.
