Palm USB hotsync to Mac

I just bought a G4 500 mac and have OS 10.2.1 with palm desktop 4.0 installed. I also purchased a USB hotsync cable to sync my Palm Vx but am unable to do so. Has anyone encountered the same problem?

My Vx is running OS 3.5.
The USB cable itself works because the palm can be charged, it's just it won't hotsync. So tried to sync via IR. That "worked"... kind of. My stuff was transfered to the MAC but at the same time the OS was upgraded to 3.5.3 through the desktop 4.0 software I guess. Then the entire palm went for a walk so had to do a hard reset and reloaded all my stuff from my PC. Do you know if OS 10.2.1 requires the loading of the USB driver? I have it on floppy but it won't seem to load onto the mac.

You have to be running Palm OS 4 in order to use USB HotSync properly in OS X, IIRC.
