The program is most likely damaged
beyond repair, but you can try running
Norton's or TechTool Pro on the disk to
see if it can be repaired. I would just trash
the program and reinstall it. You can save
the Identities folder in the Outlook folder
and put that back in after a new install.
This is where the messages (mail)
addresses, etc are stored.

hmmm...

I've had a similar problem - OE 5.02 on
my bronze Firewire Powerbook. It was
working fine until today when i get the
following:

"The preferences file could not be
opened.
An unknown error (4357) occurred

I've tried binning the prefs, and
re-installing but still no success.

anyone got any thoughts?

The original post is old and the 1st
response is wrong advice.
This is for Grame.
I had same error # so I called Tech
He showed me how to fix it.
There are three Preference files that need
to be trashed so new ones are made.
In main preferences folder trash
following: Internet Preferences
also - OUTLOOK Express
Preferences
Then go to Folder "DOCUMENTS"
Under Main identity find" Preferences"
and trash it too. That's all there is to it!
Should be fixed at this point.
Be sure and write down your Internet
setting or else you may have to call your
Interenet provider for the information.
I hope this solves your problem.
Goodluck!
