my aunt and uncle want me to fix their ibook but i don't know a thing about macs. but they said they installed osx onto it a little while ago and now they can't get into any of their documents that they have saved on it. i tried and it keeps telling me it can't find an application to open the documents with. is there anyway to fix this without losing everything that was saved on their computer. any help is greatly appreciated

We're gonna have to know a lot more about it before we can help. Can you get the iBook in front of you?

Can you boot into OS 9 and they still work? (System Prefs/Startup Disk) Sounds like a Classic issue to me.

My guess, after re-reading the OP, is that OS X is now the default OS on there, and the apps they formerly used to open their various files aren't OS X applications but rather OS 9 applications.
Unless there's some very compelling reason for your aunt and uncle to move to OS X, I would advise that you boot it back into 9 using the Startup Disk pref pane and leave it that way.

Go to the View menu when System Preferences is open and select Startup Disk.
