Can I use osX installer discs from a G5
mac to upgrade from os9.1 to osx on an
400mhz imac? Are the discs specifically
for a G5?

depends..., if discs are for specific g5, then maybe not, also read info on system requirements first, might not be compatible without addition settings, harddrive's format, carbon lib's and such...:)

Most likely won't work. Apple started shipping machine
specific systems again.

Yes, it will work. Works very nicely in fact. I have a Dual
G5 and I found an old blue iMac at a yard sale for $200. It
is a 400MHz. (G3 upgraded to G4) It not only upgraded to
10.3 but has taken all the upgrades to 10.8. Although a
bit slower, that older Mac never burps. It pulls any load I
have given it.
