I use and am very well aqainted with windows based Operating Systems but know very little about Mac Operating Systems. The problem is my girlfriend is a Mac user and we need an internet connection we can both use in our new flat. I am aware that Airport supports both OSX and WinXP but can both Operating Systems simultaneously share the connection and are there any other methods available for connecting a pc and a Mac to a wired LAN? Sorry if I sound like a Moron but whilst I am an advanced PC user I am totally new to OSX! Any help is greatly appreciated

on my site i have one mac on mainly windows network you will find on your Mac TCP/IP settings use these setting as you would on a PC to spcifiy your internet gateway/router by IP address. http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/mac/osxnetworking/macosxnetwork.html

You also can connect the two machine togther to share files see No 2 on that page

Just buy yourself a router with an adsl broadband modem
built in - very easy to set up. If you are using airport, you
will need to buy a wireless adsl modem router.

You can also share files via the router, and it does not
require the main machine to be on for the other machine to
access the internet like a standard network does.

This is a great idea getting the router as they are about 75 bucks for a decent one and you have very little configuring. This will share your internet connection and if you decide to it will share your files later, but with a lot more configuring.

If you get a cheap router like the price range I mentioned a recommend a linksys as I have used dlink and trust me you want a linksys.

Other wise you will have to set up one of the computers with another ethernet card and then make it share the internet connection, which is much harder than the router way. Trust us.

You will want to change the routers default administrator password though. These is usually very well documented on the manfactures sites! Try to use a secure password as you will not have to enter it much. Lots of characters and numbers. And write it down in a safe place.

Remember that just because the computers are different externally doesn't mean that they are internally.

All computers generally use tcp/ip for internet and file transfer. Even though they look different.

You know what sucks.
Is when people answer posts
with assumptions.
