Updater fails (freezes) after few minutes
of trying to update my OS9.1 to OS9.2 on
a firewire 500 MHz Powerbook G3 (128
Mb RAM). Any suggestions welcome.

You need to update the firmware first. Go to support.apple.com and select firmware updates, and follow the flashing procedure.
Also, be sure you read the read me in the update version you are selecting to see if there is a machine specific version needed for the install. You may also have a corrupted image file.
