hello,
i have a weird chooser problem! when trying to connect a spare hplj4 printer using ethernet with a good jd appletalk card it will NOT see the printer in chooser...i downloaded the hp hqx driver software but that does not seem to load properly either....this install w/ same os9 worked fine in other workgroup with 7600's and 4si printer w/ same jd-card....of course the g4's only have ethernet and usb ports no appletalk...obtw a networked apple printer works fine in chooser everytime....go figure should be 5min job lasted 3days HELP--many thanks
this is a simple local network 4 g4 macs hub 2 printers (one apple one hplj4) no www
tested printer, card, and cable ok
rich---obvious must be something i'm missing (brain)

I am assuming you are clicking on the correct zone and then chooseing laserwriter 8 to see it? Have you tried the HP printers utility?

tried everything i could think of, it is a usb/ethernet g4mac machine so no appletalk printer port. the software may be expecting to see the appletalk port??????(it is set to ethernet)
no zones are specified
as i said in earlier post the software(download from hp) worked on an earlier install of a 4si printer on a 7600 mac with os9 this was connected 1st with appletalk cable then ethernet...this new install is a HPLJ4 printer could i be missing a rom in the lj4 printer? or some ppd file to get it started so it would find it?
thought it might be the virus checker holding up the install but it wasn't that either.
have not taken the boat 4si to the location where the lj4 is but might see if it will work.
tried different jet direct cards and cables
the lj4 printer says the jd card is ok
and the g4 network prints fine to apple laser printer. the hp software even finds the applewriter
at this point it seems like the lj4 is somehow bad.

well dudh---yes
not to be rude but that is why i am asking the "experts"
i will check again but as i said it finds the networked applewriter fine within the same LW8 chooser!
same network same settings just no go with the hp lj4 printer the printer that acts like it should work but doesn't
the same stuff that works fine with the 4si
in the other office

another possibility is to use a usb to parallel cable
the hold up is that it was $45
which i thought was high and it said nothing about mac compatability just windowz
thanks

So are you sure the JetDirect card is working? How about the HP printer? Has the combination of HP printer and JetDirect card *ever* worked OK on *any* computer recently?

jd card has worked in a different apple network fine. first time printer has been networked. printer test page says network card is installed and functional.

i worked up a network with ppc macs with this software and hp lj4 series printer and same jd card and everything worked fine in less than 10min. maybe the hp software is not compatable with this g4 mac. OS9 on both systems.

HP's software shouldn't make any difference. The LaserWriter 8 driver should just see it and it should "just work." Hrmmmm...
