Hello,

I'd to install an OS X Tiger on my iMac G3,
for using it with some musical
composition programs for orchestra.
Is there anyone who installed Tiger on
this computer model (even if not for using
it for musical reasons) that could let me
know if it works too bad on a G3, or not?

Thanks a lot.

http://www.lowendmac.com is a good informative site for
older macs. Everything you need to know is there.

to do this you need 10.4 on CD's (or pull the hard disk out
and put it inside a G4 or G5 machine, not an intel one) and
then download XpostFacto from www.versiontracker.com

not easy and not worth it. buy a cheap G4 400Mhz and
above.

I'm not sure Tiger would go on it unless it has firewire built-in. I can't remember how high I got with my iMac233 but think 10.2 or 10.3 before trying to play around with Linux (not yet successful on that machine).

Wether or not it is fast enough depends on the processor. My wife's G3 iBook 500MHz has 10.4.7 and does have some trouble with video playback. MP3's seem okay.

I have a G3 350mhz iMac with no dvd drive and no firewire drive and I was able to install OS X Tiger without a problem. I didn't need xpost facto to trick it it just worked. Just make sure you install the firmware upgrade first (you need os 9.2.2 running) and also to make the first partition with OS X less than 8gb (7.5 is good) Mine runs excellent and I have Garageband from iLife05 running fairly good with only a few software instruments not running.
