Comment:

Does OS X.2 have any program/utility/command line program akin to Windows' system registry, in where one can make changes to basic system operations above and beyond the control panels/system preferences? And, are there any good books that address such issues?

There are plenty of website if you do a google search that give you lots of hints and tips, plus there are some books you can buy (although I never read any of them and have no idea if they are worth the paper printed on)

Try google.

netinfo and defaults come to mind, e.g.

defaults write .GlobalPreferences NSTimeFormatString '%e %b, %1I:%M'

adds the date to the menu bar clock display.

O'Reilly have some Mac books, and their website is a mine of information.

At the risk of cross-posting, Apple discussion forums can be really useful as well.
