I recently updated my G4 with OS 9.2.1.
Suddenly, I can't open my printer, a GCC
XL 616. I get different error messages
depending on the program I'm trying to
print from, but the basic OS message is,
"can't open printer." I can see the printer, I
can choose it, I can mount it on the
desktop, I've updated its drivers (which
GCC says are compliant). But nothing. I
can't even open virtual printers, like PDF
or PS, which I use regularly.I did not think this was OS-specific, but
I've seen a number of other references to
this problem. But no solutions. Does
anyone know the answer?

If you are using Adobe Type Manager:
Disable it and reboot. See if it helps. I had
a problem with 9.2.2, and running ATM lite
where I could not see my printer.
Seems every OS update finds ATM
behind the pack in compatibility.

I upgraded from 9.01. I'm trying to avoid
going back, because a clean install
would have its own set of problems. Plus,
I hate being locked into reverting when I
feel like there must be a solution out
there.I'll try the ATM fix. I susbequently saw this
same problem referenced in a forum on
Apple's site, and a solution there also
mentioned ATM and a conflict with
Suitcase -- which I use as well. Thanks to you both!

OK, in case anyone else out there comes
across this and is wondering: This is
definitely a Suitcase-ATM conflict. First,
you need to have ATM Light 4.6.2 with
9.2+. Also, make sure ATM falls after
Suitcase in the control panels, so that it
loads last. You can do this by adding a
space between the tilde (~) and the word
"Suitcase."This solved it for me, anyway!

Yes, that's it. SC8, and that's the file name
you need in control panel. Suitcase
should be second to last, and ATM last.I'm not sure how the files were ordered
before I upgraded to 9.2, but after the
install, ATM was second to last, and
Suitcase came last. That's the conflict. Each file has the ~ character in front of its
name, so "~ATM" comes before
"~Suitcase." So rename the Suitcase file with a space between the ~ and
the S. The file then moves above ~ATM.
Restart, and you're back in business --
and you can use both ATM and Suitcase.BUT, you also need to make sure you are using ATM Light 6.2.2. If not, it's a quick and free download on Adobe's site.

Latest is 4.6.2, yes.
And having the ATM cp load after suitcase
cp works (for me anyway)! Thanks to
Sean for forwarding the tip!

A thousand blessings on your heads! I
have been trying to figure that one out for
a few hours. THANK YOU! I thought
maybe the Mac had me licked, and that's
a BAAAAD feeling. Thanks again!
