Comment:

My ibook is doing whacky things after installing the os 9.2.2 update. I keep getting a pop-up telling me that the set of extensions doesn't match what my computer is trying to use...asking if I'd like to revert, create new. Should I be using os 9.2.2 "base" , "all" or create my own set???
Also, My control panels vanished. How do I get them back from the drive to the apple menu.
As a last resort, can I (should I )re-install the update ???

Let it create its own new set and then go into the Extensions Manager and enable everything.

Your Control Panels should show up in
your Apple menu. If they do not appear in
your system folder then you can do a
partial install to reset everything. (I do
think they are there somewhere as your
computer uses most of them to function)
To reinstall your Control Panels:--Just
insert your original CD and restart holding
the C key down until you see a
backgraound of CDs. then double click on
the install icon and go thru to the select
hard disk then select add/remove then
select Mac OS 9.2.2 then on the right side
select customise option then select
control panels at the bottom as well as
core system software at the top. You can
untick all the others and then OK. It wont
take long and you wont have to change
any settings except maybe OK the
Assistant when restarting.

There's no need to go through all that trouble unless they've actually been deleted, and in all likelihood, the Extensions Manager has just disabled them.

Success!
Enabled all extensions...and moved a
copy of the control panels from the
system back into the apple menu. Had to
take a good look at the sytem folder to
see what was up. Fortunately, I was able
use my imac configuration as a guide. I'm
relatively new to mac, but I love the
challenge and thank you for your help.

Make sure you don't have two copies of all your control panels now - the folder in the Apple menu should be an alias to the real folder, not a duplicate.

Got it P. One control Panels folder is in the "system" folder...an alias is in the apple menu items. You da man! I discovered a number of copies , most of which were empty...others had maybe one or two items. I trashed the copies. Is it safe to delete those trashed copies with everything apparently running fine now?
I'm still learning here...what's the difference between a duplicate and alias?

A duplicate is exactly that.

An alias is the Mac version of a Windoze "shortcut," sort of like an encyclopaedia reference that says "see [reference]."
