I have a performa 6115CD. I now have OS 8.0 but would like ot upgrade to 8.1. Some people say Macintosh recommends going no higher than 8.0. But I haven't seen that in print. Does anyone know for sure? 8.1 will allow me to do much more things. Thanks!

i haven't heard of any problems with 8.1 on that
machine. i would upgrade as it is a bit more stable.
just for the record, i've installed 8.5 on a 6100/66
without any problems. just make sure you have
enough RAM.

good luck.

go to the apple site and search for the spec sheet on your mac. it will list all supported OS's. I have a 'bare bones' custom install of a more recent OS running on some 040 machines that should not be able to run on them, but that's me and my level of experience. I would not go farther than the recommended OS for your mac. There are other sites that list the same info, and are probably easier to navigate. Check a search engine for these. And....You may not want to upgrade to a higher OS for lack of ram (Newer OS = Memory HOG), and to be frank, your 6115 will run better for you if you stick to the lowest OS you can get away with. The old hardware really chokes with an OS made for more recent iron. Think PRODUCTIVITY instead of bells -n- whistles.

Better yet, get MacOS 8.6. 8.1 had some
real stability problems. Better still, sell
that old doggy (it's worth $200 tops) and
get a faster machine that comes with
more RAM and more drive capacity, and
OS 9. I wouldn't spend 10 cents on a
really old Mac. You'll only be frustrated.

Yeah, Pang....

I know....Rich people. Not necessarily rich people, but usually those who think they know better than others and love to spout off. Those of us who have been cranking-it-out-for-pay with macs for ten years remember when a 2FX was respectable iron and a 33 mhz Quadra was "The s---" (Most of 'em had.....CD drives!!!!! Oh, Blessed are the TOWERS!). The recommendation to use a lighter operating system was responded to with 'BETTER YET' get a more recent and hardware taxing OS! Gotta laugh. Old Macs are still quite useful IN THE RIGHT HANDS! Better than a nose-wiping newbie on a G4!

I'd try to get Mac OS 7.6.1; Being the last version of system 7, it's stable and runs well on older Macs.I've got an elderly Quadra 660AV, before that I was struggling with an LCII, so this Quadra is like the newest whiz bang kick butt computer to me.
You don't need to spend big bucks just to have the latest hardware, just something to get the job done.Imagine splashing out on a new iMac SE just to browse the web?
