I have tried for hours to connect my G4 to my dads
laptop running XP. With no luck i have had some
of my pro friends try, they can't either. When i ping
the PC from the mac the pings come back so they
do communicate. But i cant transfer files. Would
dave work to transfer files? Also if i connected a
cross-over cable connecting both comps what
app would i use to make that work? thanks.

For connecting to the PC:

Try the SMB specification for OS X written up
here:

5436.html

For connecting to the Mac:
Turn on "Windows File Sharing" in the Sharing
System Preference in OS X 10.2.

In the Accounts System Preference check the
"Allow user to log in from Windows" (under Edit
User).

The Mac should now show up in the Network
Neighborhood on the PC.

A crossover cable between the computers will
work fine for networking the two together. You
can connect using either of the above methods.
