Is there such thing as an Optical drive that does not need software to run. Like a plug n play type thing. My drive will not read anything so it just spits the CDs and DVDs right back out so I was told to get an optical drive but I cant use them because they need the software installed which I can not do.

Yeah. Most will just come with some software like Toast but they are all pretty much plug and play. Applications can see every piece of hardware that System Profiler acknowledges.
