noticed a lot of messages about opening
.dmg files in os 9. people have told me
that you can do it if you are running Disk
Copy 6.4 or later, which will run under os
9. I personally haven't gotten this to work,
but here's a link to download Disk Copy
9.4.

I read that .dmg files are disk image files. are they similar to .iso files?

In that both types of files are disk images, yes.
