Comment:

Suddenly this morning I discovered my number keypad wasn't workin. Yes, I made sure the num lock was on. I tried restarting and even booting from the OS X install CD to try to repair, but no luck.

However, the number pad DOES work on the OS X logon screen, I can type numbers in for my password. It just doesn't work once I get logged in.

Can anyone help me out?

Matthew

Try opening some different apps and see if it works in those.

Nope, doesn't seem to work in anything. I tried
Safari, Excel, the calculator, and Textedit.

Is there some preferences I could "trash" or
something -- that seems to be a popular remedy.

Any help would be appreciated.

As a follow up piece of information, I booted into OS
9.2 and the number keypad works there.

Yah I fixed it!

I found the problem on Apple's support site. The
"Mouse Keys" feature in the Universal Access control
panel was turned on. I couldn't figure out how I
managed to do that, but apparently hitting the
Control key five times will turn this feature on,
making your number keypad act as a mouse.

If anyone else ever has this trouble, the support
document I looked at was here:

So it *was* working - you just weren't pressing the keys long enough to see the mouse move ;)
