No chime/ won't boot ftrom cd

I came to work and got the flashing hard drive with the question mark. I was able to boot from my old 8.1 cd but not from 9. Ran disk first aid and got the hard drive to fix itself. Still was not able to boot from it.
At this point I saved my data files I needed and tried to do a clean install. Reformatted the drive (I should have copied all the contents over to one of my network drives, but I didn't).
Reloaded OS 8.1, figuring I could re-load 9. The 8.1 will load from the hard drive or the CD, but when I put the 9 CD in it will not load from the drive nor show up like it should on the desktop. The machine also does not give a start-up chime.
I've tried re-setting the pram and the firmware. HELP?!?!?!?!
