I have a new 14" screen iBook (purchased in September 2002) and an old HP LaserJet 4mp printer. So far, I haven't been able to get the LaserJet to work. I have the Farallon Ethermac iPrint Adapter LT and a phonenet connector, and the drivers from hp.com. But it still doesn't work. A customer support guy from Apple claims that the newest iBooks work only with USB and direct Ethernet printers. My brother (computer guy) says this guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Does anyone know how to talk me through this? Or know anyone who does? Thanks.

You need to turn on AppleTalk in OS X in order to use that printer, because the LocalTalk bridge you're using doesn't pass TCP/IP packets.

You also need to go into the MIO section
of the Printers menu and turn Appletalk
on.
I would suggest it would be better to run it
on TCP/IP via your ethernet port if the
ethernet card is in the printer. Then do a
test print by pressing the on line button to
go offline then scroll thru the menu to test
print then press enter. This will print your
IP and Appletalk name which should be
something like HP Laserjet 4mp.

There's clearly not an Ethernet card or there wouldn't need to be a bridge.
The printer has AppleTalk turned on all the time; there isn't any way to turn it off last I checked.

I'm confused...with the iPrint adapter, you don't need to use phonenet. If you don't have a network to connect to, then get a crossover cable to go between the iMac and the iPrint. If you do have a switch or hub, then connect both to the network with straight patch cables. Also, as someone else pointed out, make sure that AppleTalk is using the ethernet port.
