Hello, I just recently bought a Power Mac 6100/66. I would like to network it with my PC to share an internet connection (I run Win 98SE). I'm brand new to mac so please bear with me. Do mac's use the same cable for networking as a PC? Also, I see that there is a kit by Farallon called HomeLINE that networks PCs to Macs via the phone line in your home. The mac & PCs must have a free PCI slot availiable. How many PCI slots do the 6100 have (it also has a DOS card that I could remove)? Does this work well? What about just doing a standard network between the computers and then using the internet sharing feature on Win 98SE (after the PC recognizes the Mac on the network, of course). Where can I learn more about networking PCs to Macs? Also is there any good websites on the 6100 and how everything works on it? Sorry for all the questions.

Your 6100/(66?) Dos Compatible is the same one I have. It has no PCI slots. If you remove the Dos Card (I Did) it will free up the PDS slot which opens your options up to put in an "LC" type card in there. This can be an ethernet card if you like, but the 6100 has built in ethernet already. Theres a little port on the back, a funny lookin' thing called an AAUI port. A strange item for Apple computers. Not many had these as they were a pain in the ass. Looks like this: . You need a ethernet tranceiver for this, which will allow you to connect to 10Base-T (RJ45) patch cable. Don't bother with that PHONELINE/HOMELINE crap. It's garbage. As far as connecting to your PC, you will need some software called "DAVE" or "PC/MAC LAN" or something to allow your 2 platforms to see one another. Or you could run NT on the PC and load up for Mac networking (Not sure what you need, really, but I know NT can do it.). As far as sharing an internet signal there are many options. Read former posts for more.

Hey, where I wrote "Looks like this:": There was a symbol I made by putting a left carat, three bullets, and a right carat, that did not show up. HTML formatting or something. Anyway, e-mail for more info.

I would suggest you use a program called timbuktu. This is a great program that will even let you control you pc from your mac and visa versa. You will still need a ethernet cable to connect them. I am using timbuktu on my 7300x2, IIsi, IIci and my 133PC and works perfectly email me for more info Fred

I use VNC to remotly control, works on PC, MAC, and unix, has a java client for more portability. as for ICS. Both computers need a ethernet NIC (is it onboard the 6100?) Connect the two with a crossover cable, configure the 98 machine and set the mac to DHCP.
Summary: Yes. I think you've answered your own question, in part - the resource fork problem which the PC doesn't know how to handle. I don't know if it's possible to do drag-and-drop in exactly the way you wa...
