Is there any way to get simple filesharing networking between an XP Pro machine and a Powerbook 540 running 7.5.5 using a crossover cable? I've been able to share the PC's internet connection with the same Mac and cable setup before, but neither machine has a connection to the internet anymore and I can't run an ftp site off either machine. I don't want to buy a router (I'd just go back to using floppies....cheaper) and I don't have access to Windows 2000 for any of the Appletalk protocols. I already tried this in the XP forum since I think it's more of an issue with Microsoft than Apple, but I think it's worth a shot here. Thank you!

Can't do it without some software like Dave or PC
MacLAN. If it's for the sole purpose of moving some
files, floppies or another removeable media (Zip,
etc.) would probably be your best bet.-Wycke

I tried the demo version of MacLAN and it works perfectly! Yup. I don't think it's worth buying, though. The files I need to transfer and keep updated aren't that big. Thank you!

Here's a thought...
What if you ran a Mac emulator on the 'Doze machine and ran File Sharing under that?

There is a way. I recommend searching for some free ftp server on tucows.com. Guild FTP would do fine. Run it on the Windows Machine. Then download an ftp client for the Mac, or use Internet Explorer. Setup an IP Address for you Windows Machine (Start, Control Panel, Network Connections, Local Area Connection. Click properties. Click on TCP/IP. Click Properties. Fill in the bubble beside use the following IP address. Set the IP to 192.168.1.100 set the netmask to 255.255.255.0 and leave the rest blank. Restart both machines. Start the FTP Server on the Windows Machine then on the mac, start Internet Explorer and type in
ftp://192.168.1.100/
It will login as an anonymous user. It you set up the FTP Server with accounts, then type in this (assuming the user name is user and the password is pass)
ftp://user:pass@192.168.1.100/
That should fix it. It is VERY frustrating, but it does work and only costs a little bit of time. But once it is set up, it is well worth the time.
