Here is my situation. I have two systems (WIN 98 and iMac OS 9.1). Both connected to a network hub. I have a Lexmark Optra R+ printer (PostScript) connected to an HP JetDirect 170X which is also connected to the hub. All 3 devices have IP addresses. I can ping every device from either machine. I used HP JetAdmin on the PC to be able to print. How do I do the equivalent on the Mac side? I was told that I could set up an Ethernet Printer on the iMac, but I am not sure how to go about doing that.
I'm fairly new to this Mac stuff, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
-Rich

I have done a similar thing on my network, except with a epson printer. The first thing that you need is a macintosh driver, this software should be already installed in the mac. Check in the "extensions" folder, within the "system folder" and look for "Laserwriter 8". If not there, it will be on the System disc supplied with the Computer, Drag it from the CD to the "extensions" folder.
The next thing you need is a PPD file (Postscript Printer Description) for this printer. This software is at the Lexmark support site ( http://drivers.lexmark.com/drivers.nsf/SelectPrinter?OpenForm&Lexmark+Optra+Lx%2B,+Lxi%2B,+Lxn%2B,+R%2B,+Rn%2B,+and+Rt%2B ).
This site shows PPD file #2001-03-22 for the mac. Download this file and place in "SystemFolder"/preferences/"printimg prefs"/"PPD folder"/HERE
To activate this printer click the "Apple Menu" column (far left at top) double click the "Chooser", a window will open, the "Laserwriter 8" show, click the driver to high light it. there will be a SETUP selector something like that. If it says automatic setup click that.
Open an application, click on the file FILE MENU drop down and click PAGE SETUP, select your printer and try printing something.
The spec for this printer are at ( http://www.lexmark.com/printers/laser/Optra/rptech.html ). This Shows that a 10 base-T ethernet port was an option for this printer. You might want find if your printer can be upgraded to this. Then you can sell your HP JetDirect 170X print server, and direct connect the rj45 plug from the hub to the printer. This printer also has a rs232 port you can plug a standard Apple talk cable to a "USB to Apple talk" adapter and make the MAC play through the USB port.Should work let me know
