I have brand new G4 iMac (700 MHZ
model). I am running OS 9.2.2.

I can plug my Telstra cable modem
directly into the Ethernet port and I can
connect to the Internet fine.

But I want to share the cable modem with
another Mac and plug network printer into
hub so both Macs can print to it.

So I was told to buy Netgear RT314
gateway router, which I did.

I plug the cable modem into the Internet
port (using the cable that usually
connects the modem to the imac). The
PWR and Internet LEDs are green. I then
connect Cat 5 cable (straight - not cross
over) from one of the Local ports to the
Ethernet port on my iMac. The
coresponding Local LEDs (Link/Act and
100) both light up.

I go to TCP/IP and make sure it;s set to
Ehernet and DHCP server.

I restart mac.

I try to go to http://192.168.0.1 to configure
the router but no page loads. There's
nothing at that IP address. I try to ping it
and it doesn't respond. I look into TCP/IP
control panel and the IP address is in the
169.254.xxx.xx range.

I try again, same result.

I try swapping cables around. Using lots
of different ones, Plugging them into
different ports.

I try calling my ISP they are no help.

I try calling Netgear support and they are
also no help. Say they don't support Mac
OS.

Can someone please help. I have spent
5 hours straight on this problem.

I don't know anything about networking. I
don't know if I should fiddle with Appletalk
or File Sharing or if they are irrelevant.

Basically the iMac is straight out of the
box. I haven't changed anything.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions

See ya

Just shooting in the dark...does your other mac work with the RT314?.Atleast you can isolate the problem to either your router or to the Mac. What about upgrading the router firmware. Has your router ever worked?
