If it's a Performa, it should've come with a built-in
modem. If it's missing or not working, try eBay.
Global Village and US Robotics made (make?) mac
modems...just make sure it's not USB.

the modem is missing. i got the computer 2nd hand for free from someone who did not know how to get it to work. they didn't know that the power button was on the back and that the one key on the keyboard would also power up the system. They told me that if I got it working, I could have it, and, after some trial and error, i found the power button. everything is strange going from a pc to a mac. i still think i prefer a pc, but until i get this thing up that i can see what it can do, we'll see about that :) thanks

You have two choices (hello again!)..you can either get a comm slot modem, which is likely where the one that's missing was originally,or you can get a pci modem..theres a lot of choices out there for PCI modems because theres a lot of different modem scripts available from apple's download site, but it's possible that they ( some, anyways) have to be rom-enabled for a mac..i know i had two identical US Robotics and one wouldn't work in my 7200 but the other did.
If your 6400 is like my 6500 (theyr'e pretty similar overall) you'd only have two pci slots anyways, and i suspect it might be easier to find a cheap mac modem for the comm slot than a net card (keep in mind if you use it any length of time and get to like it, your going to want to fill your pci slots with a net card or graphics card or who knows, and if theyre used up already your stuck..video cards don't fit into commslots and net cards that do are pricey as theyre harder to find, and need to fit the right way- so i'd go with trying to find a comm slot modem, leaving your 2 pci's free, even for a USB, if you end up getting OS 8.6 eventually ( it really runs nice on those things).
You got a good deal even if they're not worth tons...i wouldn't think of selling my 6500 for less than 150 bucks ( not that i'd sell it anyways even fr that, it's a great second mac..love that surround sound:)

that is the intentions, selling it. i am not really a mac user and i need the extra money. it all depends tho. I would like to upgrade it as far as i can go for free.
what about an external modem? would that work?
both PCI slots are free, and there is a hole in the back panel where i am assuming the modem was.

I am also wondering about a battery, as the one in it i am assuming is dead, since the computer will not keep the correct time if it's shut down for any amount of time more than 10 minutes. hopefully they are not too expensive?

You could use an external serial-port modem, if you can find one. Global Village (globalvillage.com) still makes them, and there are probably tons on eBay for cheap. (Search for "mac serial modem")

The battery that maintains the clock is on the logic board, which slides out of the back of the computer. Take the old one into any Radio Shack or computer store, and they should have a suitable replacement.
