I don't think any version of MS Word is freeware or abandonware. Try Ebay.

Microsoft won't like it, but I doubt you'd have much luck actually *purchasing* a version of Word before Word 97 from them.
As such, there are probably several places that have - under the questionable legal premise of "abandonware" put old versions of Word up for download.
I personally greatly prefer WordPerfect 3.5e, which is free and a far superior word processor.

I agree that the early WPs are superior to the MS Word... although I still use MS W 5.1a because it it works seamlessly with my bibliography program, which I've had for years, and can't upgrade just now... There is a site that advertises old versions of Word for re-sale - can't recall its name... I'll see if I can see it in my address book...
