This can't be true. I was told in order to play avi files, i need to install virtual windows, cause the mac OS won't play Avi files. it's just a codec, right???
i've tried many different avi files, and they won't play in quicktime, or media player for mac. Any suggestions?

Whomever told you that was full of it.

Use DIVX Doctor, MPlay, and/or any of the other various DIVX utils @ macupdate.com.

Yes, which is why you usually have to try about five different things and even then it won't necessarily work.
