Has anyone been able to get MacDraw II
1.1v2 to work on a G4 w/ OS 9.2. I recieve
a message "Not enough memory to open
file" and when MacDraw II opens up to the
default screen, there is a colored mesh
pattern filling the window. MacDraw II
1.1v2 works a G4 (older type) Mac OS 9,
and a G3 Mac OS 8.6. I can't reach
Claris's website, don't even know if they
still support it, but MUST get this program
to work.. Any ideas?

Honestly: What could you possibly be
doing that you could not use a more
recent vector application for?
If you are talking about working with
existing macdraw files are you telling me
that Adobe Illustrator (or Freehand, or
Corel, etc) can't open a macdraw file?
If you would, Please email me one so I
can have a better understanding of your
dilemma.

Illustrator and FreeHand, last I tried, couldn't. However, Claris Draw, which is the updated version of MacDraw II, almost certainly can, and you can probably find a copy of it if you look hard enough - it hasn't been updated in years so it's effectively abandonware.

Trajan,
You can change the amount of memory a program uses in the program's Info window.
To do this, highlight the program, select File - Get Info, and in the Info window, increase the memory in the Memory Requirements portion.
Also, you can get other versions of MacDraw here:
http://vieuxmac.com/DOWNLOAD/APPLICATIONS/MacDraw/
(mostly in French, but some English versions, too)

While Phil gives what would normally be
useful advice, I think in this situation
you're running into a program that simply
will not run on Mac OS 9, no matter what
you try to do with it.p

On an older 9500/200 PPC Mac using
MacOS 9.1 (US) and only 96 MB RAM I
can still use MacDraw II 1.1v1 to open the
old MacDraw files. The program appears to work flawlessly. I also managed to use
MacDraw on a PowerBook G3 (FireWire)
under MacOS 9.2.2 with only 128 MB RAM
in it. These are the only techniques
known to me which allow you to open old MacDraw files.I believe it is important that you use a machine with little RAM, since the checking for free
memory generates an integer overflow,
which results in the erroneous "Not
sufficient memory available" state of
MacDraw. Then MacDraw refuses to do anything else. Otherwise it would still work under MacOS 9.2.2.Hope this helps.
P.S.: So far I managed to open every file,
regardless how old. I am a Mac user
since 1985 and frequently run into similar
problems. Don't give up too early.

I believe the problem is not the amount of
ram but the size of the hard drive...
MacDraw does not recognize hard drives
larger than 2 gig. If you partition your hard
drive to have at least one partition less
than 2 gig.. say 1.9 and keep the program
and all Mac Draw files on that partition it
should work...

You might try the advice I gave in the
above post by putting the application and
files on a zip disk if you have one...this
would obviously be less than 2 gigs..
good luck..

I am using MacDraw Pro on a iMac SE &
OS9.2.2 and have the same problem. I
can save files by doing a "Save As" to the
desktop and later dragging to HD folder
after deleting the old file. Will MacDraw work on OS10 ?

Hood, I bet it's not volume size, but an HFS/HFS Plus issue. Good call, though. I think that's probably it.
Ken, no idea if it'll work in Classic on OS X, but you could try it...

Was able to open MacDraw II 1.1 with screen resolution 640x480. Not very nice but working. ClarisDraw couldn' t open it. (With OS X 10.1.4 in Classic mode( 9.2.2)
