macbook ethernet ip address different subnet to wifi address

January 25, 2013 at 10:25:51
Specs: MAC OS-x 10.6, Pentium M (1.73Mghz/1.5Gig RAM)

I have a Speedtouch 716g router. Quite olde I guess these days. Set to use DHCP for addresses across a home lan. Works fine both wifi and cat-5 in windows..., but I have a mixed lan system; windows and a Macbook Pro (OSx 10.6)

While Mac OS-x 10.6 gets an ip address for MAC wifi in same range/subnet as in windows.., somehow it gets a "different" subnet etc. for MAC cat-5 connections...

e.g. Windows gets: 192.168.1.xx for both cat-5 and wifi...

But...

MAC OSx 10.6 gets:192.168.0.xx for cat-5

- and 192.168.1.xx for MAC wifi... (different subnet...)

Setting the Macbook ethernet/cat-5 to use manual settings..., and thus ensuring its ip address is in same subnet etc. as in Macbook wifi (and windows cat-5/wifi), leaves it unable to connect to home lan and/or to the internet... when wifi (Airport) is not enabled (active) on the Macbook

Leaving its cat-5 set to DHCP assigned rather than manual, means it will connect to lan and internet - even with the apparently different subnet as above - but not able to connect to a Canon MP600R printer (via its cat-5 path), presumably because the Macbook is not on the same subnet as the Canon...? And, again with DHCP enabled, can browse the lan and access any/all other network items there; and also access the Canon via "wifi" (only) no problem...

Is there something I'm missing here?

Is this an issue related to the age of the router (firmware etc.) or what? A trawl out there on the www does seem to suggest it is/may be a firmware issue? Or is there something within Macbook settings etc. I need to be aware of?

It has been and, apart from above issue, remains pretty reliable etc. so I'm naturally reluctant to dump it...

While I can use wifi for most things - I prefer to use cat-5... Besides more solid/stable connection, also enables/allows easier connection to cat-5 Epson Laser printer (emulating an HP4), via D-link print server (which latter also works just fine...)

Not that familiar with Mac OS overall; but not total novice either; and know my way around windows systems and networking generally... But any ideas, advice etc. would be much appreciated...

If it is really an issue around router age/firmware etc... (and I'm not sure there is a more recent firmware version around to encompass/include OSx 10.6...) I guess I will either have to stay with wifi or spend out for a new access-router...

And if the latter - suggestions/recommendations or a decent/reliable etc. model would be appreciated. (I'm in the UK for the most part - although often in N.Am... - so a UK source is logically better at this time).

As always, thanks for any input...
