Subject: mac won't start up
Comment:

My Dad needs some help with his power
mac 4400. It suddenly won't start up. He
gets a ? on the screen and that's it....Can't
do anything else.

I had him try starting up with the sytem
software cd and the message he gets on
the screen is: "the selected name "apple
mac cd" is locked". "Click switch to
choose a different disk"

Does anyone have a suggestion??

Thank you

Try holding the Shift key down while
booting. If it won't boot that way, put the
CD in and start holding the C key down.

Sounds like he already got it booted with the CD, but there were problems...

Turn on the Mac and hold down cmd-opt-P-R to zap the PRAM. Do this until it chimes three or four times. Then boot from the system CD.

When you boot from that CD, go to the Startup Disk control panel and select the internal HD to boot from.
