Hi,

I'm trying to network my mac computer to a pc
located remotely. I have an iMac running mac os
10.3.9 and an adsl internet connection using a d-
link DSL300 modem. Basically I need to connect
to a single pc at a client's office - the office is set
up with a server so I assume the networking
would take place over the internet.

I just wondered if someone could outline what I
need to do to get this working. Do I need any
specific hardware or software on my computer
and/or does my client need anything in particular
on their side? What settings will I need and where
do these setting need to be inserted? Also what
will the networking enable me to do because I'd
like to be able to use some software that is
installed on their computers and also I'd like file
transfers to be able to take place.

Can anyone help out here with any of my
questions?

Thanks so much for any advice offered.

I'm trying to accomplish the same thing..transferring files from my mac to my dad's PC in another town..although Ill let you know what i did if and when i find out how..i suspect it may lie in the mac's ability to use TCP-IP and I.P. addresses for file sharing..i imagine that the mac would simply have to find the correct I.P...i'm not sure how it would work on a Wide area network, as i currently share only between macs in the same house, although they are connected to the net also through the same hub..ands on the same provider (not sure how that applies to domains, tho..).
I bet you'd need the PCs I.P. and /or computer name, and you'd definitely have to enable file sharing on the P.C. too..
Also (at least in OS9, not sure how it differs in OSX) on the Mac you'd need - Apple talk enabled,
Appletalk's 'connect via' set to 'ethernet
and File sharing 'on'
I think 'connect with TCP-IP' also would be neccesary- i don't need it in the home network, but possibly would, to reach my Dad's PC...
Any more than that, though, i can't say, at this point...

First off, you don't need a translation program such as MacLinkPlus. That's the beauty of Mac OS X.

Also, since Mac OS X is standards based, you already have TCP/IP turned on. Since this is a PC, you don't need to turn on AppleTalk.

When I connect to another Mac over the internet, I used SSH through the terminal, but that solution may not be idea for you.

The previous poster is right about just finding the IP address. I think that if you get on the phone with the client and have him go to Start>Run>command and then type ipconfig and then have him give you the IP address of the adapter that connects him to the internet and then you go to your mac and hit command+k and then type smb://hisnumber and hit connect you should get a connection box. Now, you will need to access to his computer.

So, you can have him set you up an account on his computer (Control Panel>Users in Windows pre XP and Control Panel>User Accounts in XP) and then right click his HD and go to sharing and set that up giving you full access. Then you type in the user name and pass that he gave you from his PC and it should connect.

However... if you are connected to a LAN, and your Mac gives that connection priority, it may give you a message saying you cannot connect. Then you will need to unplug/turn off those network connections.

Since the PC isn't set up, it might take some work on the part of your client. PCs are just that way. It's easy on the Mac though. Sorry if I've made the Mac side sound hard... it's not at all. Trust me. And post again if you need more help.
